SRI President, 2007-2008

I served as Secretary-Treasurer from 2002 through 2004, and then joined the presidential succession, serving as President in the 2007-2008 term. I would argue that the chief challenge facing the SRI (SGI) in that period was financial – we were still recovering from major deficits incurred in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and faced a rapidly shrinking endowment. Guided by a strategic plan created under President Sherman Elias and after six years of relentless cost cutting, aggressive fund raising including robust expansion of our Corporate Advisory Board, generation of a series of NICHD U13 grants, introduction of revenue generating summits and increased international membership our endowment climbed back to $ 2.7 million in early 2008 and we ran a series of modest surpluses throughout each of these years. We also renamed our journal, Reproductive Sciences, which was ably edited by Hugh Taylor.  During my tenure we held a well-attended Summit in Valencia, Spain on Reproductive Medicine, had the annual meeting in San Diego. The latter was highlighted by outstanding talks from Bert O’Malley, Jan-Åke Gustafsson and the late Elwood V. Jensen, describing their seminal discoveries in steroid receptors. I also traveled throughout the UK assessing venues for our first international meeting – which occurred in Glasgow in 2009.
