The Society of Academic Specialists in General Obstetrics and Gynecology (SASGOG) is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2022 Program for Researchers in Obstetrics, Gynecology and REproductive ScienceS (PROGRESS) course.
With rising maternal morbidity and mortality rates, increasing rates of chronic debilitating conditions in women, stagnant cervical cancer survival rates, and significant inequities in almost all outcomes by race/ethnicity, geography, and access to care, there is an urgent need to develop the current and next generations of researchers that will contribute to an understanding of, and intervene to address and positively impact, these and related issues. The current state must be changed, and progress must be made.
The PROGRESS course will establish a research foundation for early career academic obstetrician-gynecologist specialist faculty and subspecialty fellows. Additionally, it will establish an engaged network of experienced and emerging researchers that will promote, sustain, and empower course participants’ careers while furthering the health and welfare of women and gender-diverse persons cared for by obstetricians and gynecologists.
The course will be patterned off the Drs. Grimes & Schulz Exxcellence research course, formerly known as the ‘Berlex’ course, and will be led by Course Director, Jeffrey F. Peipert, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Indiana University School of Medicine. Faculty for the October 2022 course will include Kristen Matteson, MD, MPH, Professor, Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, and Research Division Director, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, UMass Chan Medical School, and Emily DeFranco, DO, MS, Professor, Vice Chair of Obstetrics, and Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division Director, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
Applicants will be notified of selection by mid-June 2022. Pre-work and virtual engagement will begin in August. The inaugural in-person course will be held October 23 – 27, 2022, at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, Tucson AZ. Mentoring by PROGRESS faculty will continue following the in-person portion of the course.
